After graduating from college, Marcos and his friends decided to go out one summer's night to the famous Club 720. He heard the nightclub had one floor that would exclusively play Salsa music, so he went straight there. Granted, he didn't take a single Salsa class, but he was still confident in his ability to dance well. After all, he was Latin! Then he danced with a young lady who would permanently change the way he thought about Salsa dancing.
Curious, he asked her how long has she been dancing Salsa. She went on to say that she has been only taking classes at Latin Street Dancing for about a year! It was at that moment that he realized taking a class or two at Latin Street wouldn't be such a bad idea to see if it will make a difference for him. Surprisingly, he ended up going through the entire curriculum, and a whole new world of Salsa dancing opened up to him.
"I had this silly idea stuck in my head that just because I was of Puerto Rican descent, I inherited the ability to dance Salsa well," he laughs. "Well, I'm here to tell you that I'm living proof that not all Latinos can dance, and that we need to take classes too."
But for him, taking all these classes wasn't enough. He now wanted to explore other dance styles and take his passion for dancing to a whole new level. He was then encouraged to audition for the Chicago Latin Street Dance Company. After much debate, he tried out and, much to his surprise, made the team.
"Learning from other professional dancers and those who compete internationally really challenges and humbles you as a dancer. Joining The Chicago Latin Street Dance Company challenged me to be better and exposed me to a world of great dancers. I'm grateful to have joined the team," he says.
The experience he would later gain while traveling with the Chicago Latin Street Dance Co. and sharing stages with international dancers from across the world would later reveal another passion he never knew he had--teaching others how to dance!
Now, Marcos is honored and excited to join the Latin Street family and share what he has learn over the years with those who wish to learn how to dance. As he constantly refines his teaching style and technique, Marcos looks forward to share his love for dance to all his students at Latin Street Dancing. |
